
## Overview

Export all your highlights from Screvi as a downloadable ZIP file. Each source (book, article, etc.) becomes a separate file, organized into folders by source type.

## How to Export

1. Go to **Integrations > Export** in the web app
2. Choose your format:
   - **HTML**: Optimized for importing into Apple Notes
   - **Markdown (.md)**: Standard Markdown, great for Obsidian, Notion, or any Markdown editor
3. Click **Export**
4. A ZIP file is downloaded

## What's Included

The export contains:
- One file per source (book, article, tweet thread, etc.)
- Files organized into folders by type (Books, Articles, Tweets, Videos, Documents)
- Highlight text with any personal notes
- Source metadata (title, author)
- Tags associated with each highlight

## Article Fails to Save / "Error" Status

When saving an article, you might see it appear with an error status. This usually means Screvi couldn't extract the article content from the URL.

**Common causes:**

- **The site is behind a paywall.** Screvi's server fetches the article from the URL, but paywalled sites block access to the full content.
- **The site blocks automated requests.** Some websites (e.g. Bloomberg, certain news sites) actively block non-browser requests.
- **The page requires JavaScript to render.** Some modern single-page apps don't serve readable HTML to Screvi's fetcher.

**Solution: Save with HTML**

Use the browser extension's **"Save with HTML"** option instead:

1. Open the article in your browser (make sure you can see the full content; log in if it's paywalled)
2. Click the **Screvi extension icon**
3. If the regular save fails, the extension will offer a **"Save with HTML"** option
4. This captures the page content directly from your browser, bypassing server-side restrictions

This works because the extension reads the page as your browser renders it, including any content you have access to through your login or subscription.

## Kindle Import Not Finding All Books

Sometimes the Kindle import finishes but seems to be missing books.

**Common causes:**

- **You're on the wrong Amazon region.** If you bought books on amazon.co.uk but you're importing from read.amazon.com, those books won't appear.
- **The import didn't scroll far enough.** For very large libraries, the import needs time to scroll through all books. Don't close the tab.
- **Kindle Unlimited books returned.** If you returned a Kindle Unlimited book, Amazon may remove access to those highlights.

**Solutions:**

- Make sure you're on the correct regional Kindle notebook URL (e.g. `read.amazon.co.uk/notebook` for UK purchases)
- Let the import run to completion. Don't navigate away or close the tab.
- If you have books across multiple Amazon regions, run the import on each regional URL separately

## Highlights Appearing as Duplicates

You imported the same source twice and now have duplicate highlights.

**Why this happens:**

Screvi deduplicates based on the source identifier (e.g. Kindle ASIN) and highlight content. Duplicates can appear if:

- The highlight text has slight differences (extra spaces, different line breaks)
- The import came from a different method (e.g. once via extension, once via My Clippings file) and the source wasn't matched

**Solutions:**

- Sometimes duplicates are inevitable, especially when importing from multiple methods. Use **"Move Highlights to Another Source"** to consolidate them: open the duplicate source, tap the menu, and select "Move Highlights to Another Source". All highlights from the duplicate will be moved to the correct source, and the duplicate source will be deleted.
- Use the **AI Cleanup** feature to normalize formatting, then re-import. Screvi's deduplication is more effective on cleaned-up text.
- Delete the duplicate source from the Sources page and re-import using a single method.
- You can also manually delete individual duplicate highlights.

## Browser Extension Shows "Not Connected"

The extension icon shows a "Not connected" status and doesn't let you save articles or import highlights.

**Solutions:**

1. Visit [app.screvi.com/login](https://app.screvi.com/login) and log in. The extension connects automatically when you log in to the web app in the same browser.
2. Make sure the extension is enabled in your browser's extension settings (`chrome://extensions` or `about:addons`)
3. Try disabling and re-enabling the extension
4. As a last resort, uninstall and reinstall the extension, then log in again

## Email Digest Not Arriving

You've configured a daily email digest but aren't receiving it.

**Common causes:**

- **Not enough content.** The review system requires at least **3 sources** and **20 highlights** to activate. Email digests rely on the review system.
- **Wrong timezone.** The email is sent at your configured time in your configured timezone. Double-check both in Preferences.
- **Spam filter.** The email may be landing in spam or junk.

**Solutions:**

- Check your spam/junk folder and mark Screvi emails as "not spam"
- Go to **Preferences** and verify the time, timezone, and frequency are correct
- Make sure you have at least 3 sources and 20 highlights
- Check that email digests are toggled on

## Mobile App Not Syncing

Changes you made on the web aren't showing in the mobile app, or vice versa.

**Solutions:**

- **Pull down to refresh** on any screen in the mobile app
- Check your internet connection
- Go to **Settings** and verify you're logged in to the correct account
- If you made changes offline, they're queued and will sync automatically when connectivity returns. This may take a moment.

## iOS Share Extension Not Appearing

You installed the Screvi iOS app but can't find it in the share sheet.

**Solutions:**

1. Open the share sheet in Safari or any app
2. Scroll to the end of the app row and tap **"More"**
3. Find **Screvi** in the list and toggle it on
4. You can also reorder it to appear earlier in the list
5. Make sure you've opened and logged into the main Screvi app at least once after installing

## Kobo File Not Found

You connected your Kobo but can't find the `KoboReader.sqlite` file.

**Why:**

The file is inside a **hidden folder** called `.kobo` on your Kobo's drive. Hidden files are not shown by default on most operating systems.

**Solutions:**

- **macOS**: In Finder, press `Cmd + Shift + .` to toggle hidden files, then navigate to the `.kobo` folder
- **Windows**: In File Explorer, go to View > Show > Hidden items, then navigate to the `.kobo` folder
- **Linux**: Press `Ctrl + H` in your file manager to show hidden files

The full path is: `[Kobo Drive]/.kobo/KoboReader.sqlite`

## Article Content Looks Wrong or Incomplete

The saved article is missing content, has broken formatting, or shows navigation/menu text.

**Why this happens:**

Screvi extracts article content using a readability parser. Some websites have unusual HTML structures that make it hard to isolate the main content.

**Solutions:**

- Use the **"Save with HTML"** option in the browser extension. This captures exactly what your browser renders, which is usually more complete.
- For PDFs, use the dedicated PDF import (Integrations > PDF Import) instead of saving the PDF URL as an article
- For YouTube videos, use the "Open in Screvi" button on YouTube rather than saving the URL manually

## Spaced Repetition Review Not Available

The Review page says you need more content, or the "Start Review" button is disabled.

**Requirements:**

- You need at least **3 sources** and **20 highlights** before the review system activates
- This is intentional. The spaced repetition algorithm needs a minimum pool of highlights to create meaningful review sessions.

**Solution:**

Import more highlights. Check your current count on the **Statistics** page. Once you hit the threshold, the review system activates automatically.

## Kindle Highlights Import Is Slow

The Kindle import seems to take a very long time.

**Why:**

The extension needs to scroll through your entire Kindle library on Amazon's website, loading each book's highlights one by one. If you have hundreds of books, this can take several minutes.

**Tips:**

- Don't close or navigate away from the tab during import
- Make sure your internet connection is stable
- The first import takes the longest. Subsequent imports are incremental and only fetch new highlights.
- You can enable **background sync** in the extension settings to run imports automatically every 24 hours without manual intervention

Screvi offers a public REST API for reading your highlights and sources programmatically. Use it to build custom workflows, export data to other tools, or create your own integrations.

## Authentication

All API requests require an API key passed in the `X-API-Key` header.

## Overview

Screvi includes a full read-it-later system. Save articles from anywhere and read them in a clean, distraction-free reader with built-in highlighting.

## From the Browser Extension (Desktop)

1. Navigate to any web article
2. Click the **Screvi extension icon** in your browser toolbar
3. A toast notification confirms the save
4. After saving, you can assign tags directly from the notification

If the page has too little content (less than 50 words extracted), the extension offers a **"Save with HTML"** fallback that captures the full page content.

## From the Mobile App (Share Sheet)

### iOS

1. In Safari, Twitter, Reddit, or any app, tap the **Share** button
2. Select **Screvi** from the share sheet
3. The article is saved instantly
4. If you had text selected, it's also saved as a highlight linked to the article

### Android

1. Share any URL from any app
2. Select **Screvi** from the share options
3. The article is saved to your library

## From the Web App

1. Go to the **Articles** tab
2. Click **Add Article**
3. Paste any URL
4. The article is fetched and saved

## Saving YouTube Videos

1. With the browser extension installed, go to any YouTube video
2. Click the **"Open in Screvi"** button in the video's action bar
3. The video is saved with its full transcript
4. In the Screvi reader, highlight transcript passages with preserved timestamps

## Saving Newsletters

Each user gets a unique email address (format: `save+u_<token>@in.screvi.com`).

1. Find your Screvi email address in Settings or the Articles page
2. Subscribe to newsletters using this address
3. Newsletters are automatically saved as articles in your library

## What Gets Captured

When saving an article, Screvi extracts:
- Full article text (cleaned of ads and navigation)
- Title, author, and publication date
- Lead image
- Source URL

For PDFs, the file is stored and available for in-reader viewing. For YouTube videos, the full transcript is captured with timestamps.

## What It Does

Kindle and other e-reader exports often produce highlights with formatting issues:
- Extra spaces between words
- Broken line endings in the middle of sentences
- OCR artifacts from scanned books
- Minor typos or encoding issues

The AI Cleanup feature fixes these automatically.

## How to Use It

1. Open any highlight (from the feed, highlights page, or source view)
2. Click/tap the **AI Cleanup** option (or the cleanup icon)
3. Screvi's AI processes the text and generates a cleaned version
4. A **diff view** shows exactly what changed:
   - Word-by-word differences highlighted
   - Character-by-character changes visible
5. **Accept** to apply the changes, or **Reject** to keep the original

## What Gets Fixed

- Extra whitespace between words is normalized
- Line breaks in the middle of sentences are removed
- Obvious OCR artifacts are corrected
- Spacing around punctuation is fixed

## What Doesn't Change

The AI preserves the **meaning** of your highlight. It only fixes formatting. It doesn't rewrite, paraphrase, or alter the content.

## Original Content Preserved

Screvi stores the original text of your highlight even after cleanup. The original is used for deduplication, so reimporting the same highlight won't create a duplicate.

## What is the Highlights Feed?

The feed is the main view of Screvi. It's a scrollable stream of your highlights designed to feel like a social media feed, but filled with your own ideas instead of other people's content.

By default, highlights appear in a **randomized order** so you naturally rediscover older highlights alongside recent ones. This is intentional. Serendipitous rediscovery is one of Screvi's core concepts.

## Browsing the Feed

The feed is available on:
- **Web app**: The home page at [app.screvi.com](https://app.screvi.com)
- **Mobile app**: The Home tab

Each highlight card shows the passage text, source title, author, and any tags. You can tap/click any highlight to see its full view and take actions.

## Filtering Your Feed

Use the filter panel to narrow down what you see:

- **Source type**: Books, articles, tweets, YouTube, documents
- **Tags**: Show only highlights with specific tags
- **Date range**: Filter by when highlights were created
- **Favorites only**: Show only highlights you've favorited
- **With notes only**: Show only highlights that have personal notes attached
- **Feed order**: Switch between random and chronological

On the web app, the filter panel is in the sidebar. On mobile, use the filter options at the top of the feed.

## Stories

At the top of the web app feed, there's a Stories row (similar to Instagram Stories) showing your recently updated sources. Tap a story to see all highlights from that source.

## Actions on Highlights

From any highlight in the feed, you can:

- **Add a note**: Attach personal reflections, connections, or action items
- **Edit**: Modify the highlight text
- **Favorite**: Mark important highlights for quick access later
- **Tag**: Add or remove tags
- **Share**: Generate a styled image card to share on social media
- **AI Cleanup**: Fix formatting issues (extra spaces, broken lines)
- **Find Related**: Discover semantically similar highlights from other sources

## What is Semantic Search?

Unlike traditional keyword search, Screvi's semantic search understands the **meaning** behind your query. It uses AI embeddings (mathematical representations of text meaning) to find highlights that are conceptually related to what you're looking for, even if the exact words don't appear in your highlights.

## How to Use It

1. Go to the **Search** page (web app) or the **Search** tab (mobile app)
2. Type a natural-language question or topic
3. Results are ranked by semantic relevance
4. Click/tap any result to see the full highlight

## Example Queries

- "What did I read about making better decisions?"
- "Quotes about resilience and overcoming challenges"
- "Ideas about the compound effect of small habits"
- "Stoic philosophy on dealing with adversity"
- "Business strategy for startups"

The AI finds highlights that match the **concept**, not just the words. A search for "building good habits" might return a highlight about "the power of tiny daily improvements", even though none of the search words appear in the highlight.

You can narrow search results with filters:

- **Source type**: Search only books, articles, tweets, etc.
- **Tags**: Limit to highlights with specific tags
- **Favorites**: Search only favorited highlights

## How It Works (Technical)

Screvi generates an AI embedding (a vector in high-dimensional space) for each of your highlights. When you search, your query is also converted to an embedding, and Screvi finds highlights whose embeddings are closest to your query's embedding using cosine similarity. This is powered by AI text-embedding models.

Embeddings are generated automatically for all your highlights. New highlights get their embeddings within a short time of being imported.

## Sharing Highlights as Images

Generate styled quote cards from any highlight to share on social media, messaging apps, or save to your device.

### How to Share

1. Open any highlight
2. Click/tap the **Share** option
3. A styled image card is generated with:
   - The highlight text
   - Source title and author
   - Screvi branding
4. Save the image or share it directly

The generated image works great for Instagram, Twitter/X, WhatsApp, or any platform that supports images.

### How to Share an Article

1. Open any article in the article reader
2. Click/tap the **Share** option
3. Toggle sharing **on**. A unique public link is generated.
4. Copy and share the link

### What Happens When Someone Opens the Link

- They can read the full article in Screvi's clean reader (**no account required**)
- They can see highlights you've made in the article
- If they have a Screvi account, they can **save the article to their own library**

### Managing Shared Articles

- Toggle sharing **off** at any time to revoke access
- Each article has a unique share token. The link only works while sharing is enabled.

From the Statistics page, you can also generate and share an image of your reading statistics (total highlights, sources, favorites, etc.).

## Creating Tags

1. Go to the **Tags** page in the web app
2. Click "New Tag"
3. Enter a tag name
4. Choose a color. 18 preset colors are available, plus custom hex color support.
5. Save

Tags are shared across your highlights and articles.

There are several ways to tag highlights:

- **From a highlight card**: Click/tap the tag option on any highlight and select tags
- **During import**: Some import methods allow you to assign tags as you import
- **AI suggestions**: Open a highlight, select "Suggest Tags", and Screvi's AI recommends relevant tags from your existing tags based on the highlight's content
- **Bulk tagging**: Select multiple highlights and apply tags in bulk

- **Feed**: Filter to show only highlights with specific tags

- **Edit** a tag's name or color
- **Delete** a tag (highlights and articles keep their other tags)

- Use tags for broad themes (e.g., "Psychology", "Business", "Personal Growth") rather than per-book tags
- Let AI suggest tags to discover patterns in your reading
- Use tag filters in the feed to create focused reading sessions on a specific topic

## What is Topic Discovery?

Topic Discovery uses AI to analyze your entire highlight library and identify thematic clusters: groups of highlights that share common themes, even when they come from completely different books and sources.

## How to Use It

**In the web app:**
1. Go to the Feed page
2. Open the "Discover Topics" option

**In the mobile app:**
1. Go to the Search tab
2. Use the Topic Discovery feature

## What You'll See

Screvi identifies between 5 and 20 topics depending on the size and diversity of your library. Each topic shows:

- A descriptive label (generated by AI)
- The number of highlights in that topic cluster
- A preview of representative highlights

Tap/click a topic to see all highlights grouped under that theme.

## How It Works

1. Screvi uses the AI embeddings (vector representations) of all your highlights
2. These embeddings are clustered using semantic similarity algorithms
3. The resulting clusters are labeled by AI to give each topic a meaningful name
4. Topics are cached for performance and can be refreshed when your library grows

- **Discover hidden connections**: Find that your highlights about psychology, philosophy, and business strategy all converge on the theme of "decision-making under uncertainty"
- **Explore your reading themes**: See what topics you gravitate toward most

## Step 1: Create Your Account

Go to [app.screvi.com](https://app.screvi.com) and sign up with your email or Google account. You'll get a **7-day free trial**, no credit card required.

## Step 2: Complete Onboarding

After signing up, Screvi walks you through a short onboarding:

1. **Choose your sources**: Select where your highlights come from (Kindle, Kobo, Apple Books, etc.)
2. **Pick topics**: Choose topics that interest you to get a curated starter set of highlights
3. **Set review preferences**: Choose when you'd like to receive daily review reminders

## Step 3: Import Your Highlights

Go to the **Integrations** page to import from your primary source:

- **From your home screen**: Add the iOS widget for passive review throughout the day

## What is the Email Digest?

Screvi can send you a curated selection of your highlights via email at a time you choose. Each email contains highlights selected by the spaced repetition algorithm, optimized for memory retention without you having to open the app.

There are three ways to add a PDF to Screvi:
