Kobo

Kobo has no API for highlights, so Screvi reads them from the e-reader itself. That has an upside: highlights from any book count, including sideloaded EPUBs and library loans, not just books bought from the Kobo store.

There are two ways to do it.

Option 1: Import the Highlights File

Best for a first import or an occasional catch-up.

1. Connect your Kobo to your computer with a USB cable and tap Connect on the Kobo screen.
2. Open the Kobo drive and find the .kobo folder. It is hidden: on macOS press Cmd + Shift + . in Finder, on Windows turn on View > Show > Hidden items.
3. In Screvi, go to Integrations > Kobo and choose the Import file tab.
4. Click Select KoboReader.sqlite File (or drag the file in) and pick .kobo/KoboReader.sqlite.
5. Review the books Screvi found, then click Import All Highlights.

The file is read entirely in your browser. Only the extracted highlights are sent to Screvi.

Option 2: Automatic Sync (Beta)

Best if you highlight often and never want to plug the Kobo in again.

1. On the same page, open the Automatic sync tab.
2. Click Download KoboRoot.tgz and follow the steps shown to copy it to your Kobo. The e-reader installs a small Screvi add-on on its next restart.
3. From then on, new highlights upload to Screvi whenever the Kobo is on Wi-Fi.

Beta means it works on current Kobo firmware but may need an update after a Kobo software release. The manual import always works as a fallback.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will re-importing create duplicates?

No. Screvi matches highlights it already has and only adds new ones, so you can import the same file as often as you like.

My book covers are missing.

Kobo's database does not include cover images. Open the book in Screvi and choose Replace Cover to pick one.

I cannot find KoboReader.sqlite.

It lives in the hidden .kobo folder at the top level of the Kobo drive. See Common Issues for showing hidden files on each operating system.

Does this work with KOReader?

Not yet through this page. If you read with KOReader, export your highlights and use Manual Import for now.
